This event, commonly referred to as “Yalda,” or “Shab-e Yalda,” or “Zayeshmehr,” or “Shab-e Chelleh” is the Persian Winter Solstice celebration, which has been celebrated for more than 3000 years. Yalda is celebrated on the Northern Hemispheres longest night of the year, which is the eve of Winter Solstice. Depending on the shift of the calendar, Yalda is celebrated on or around December 20thor 21st each year. Yalda is the night of the birth of Mithra, a Persian angel of light and truth. Subject to seasonal drift, this day may sometimes fall on a day before or a day after the actual Winter Solstice. The festival of “YALDA” is celebrated by many groups of people in the Middle East, and Central and South Asia, but particularly by Persians or various Iranian peoples.
