2017 CELEBRATION OF CHARSHANBEH SURI, THE PERSIAN FESTIVAL OF FIRE

TUESDAY, MARCH 14, 2017 JIM MCENTEE PLAZA, SAN JOSE

February 5, 2017-Cupertino, CA – The Iranian Federated Women’s Club (IFWC), in partnership with County Supervisor, Dave Cortese, is proud to present Charshanbeh Suri, The Festival of Fire, on Tuesday March 14, at Jim McEntee Plaza at 70 Hedding Avenue in San Jose, from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm. The event is free to the public, and features live music and Persian cuisine.

TRADITIONAL CELEBRATION

Chaharshanbeh Suri, which literally means Red Wednesday, is an ancient Persian festival dating back 4000 years. This event, which precedes the Iranian New Year, is traditionally celebrated by lighting bonfires, in the hope they will bring health and happiness throughout the coming year. Guests of this special event will have the opportunity to participate in the traditional Chardhanbeh Suri activity of jumping over fire, signifying the end of the 1395th Persian year, and the arrival of Spring and Nowruz (New Year) 1396.

LIVE MUSICAL AND DANCE PERFORMANCES

Popular Persian Musicians Dj Shahin, and Frank Shahroozi will each offer a special live performance of contemporary Persian music. This event also features highly acclaimed belly dancer Sabiba, who will be showcasing her creative choreography in a high energy yet graceful dance performance.

PERSIAN FOOD

The IFWC is proud to announce that Red Rose Catering will be providing food for this event, allowing attendees to sample some of the finest samples of Persian Cuisine in the Bay Area. Haftseen traditional table settings and flowers are provided by Afsaneh Naderi.

LOCAL ARTISTS

Visit the mini-bazaar to enjoy both traditional and contemporary art from many well-known Bay Area artists. A limited number of artist booths are still available. For more information, contact the IFWC.

CHILDREN’S ACTIVITIES

Children will enjoy face painting and stories about the Charshanbeh Suri celebration told in both Persian and English by professional children’s entertainer Roberta (Dottie) Navarro.

A local 501C3, nonprofit, nonpolitical and non-religious organization, the IFWC was established to help integrate and empower the women and youth of the Iranian-American community and to promote Persian arts and culture throughout the Bay Area.
